Chapter 1 we cleaned up the junk files. Chapter 2 to see if there is any hardware problems.
Chapter 3 got us through checking our hardware drivers and diagnostics.
Now we will look at the miscellaneous areas that cover what we might have missed.
I'm not too concerned with viruses these days, but malware and other related 'ware' categories are a problem.
HTTP is an open port in most firewalls otherwise you would not be able to view the world wide web.
Let's check for Malware!
Malware Tune Up
"Malware is any software intentionally designed to cause damage to a computer, server, client, or computer network. Malware does the damage after it is implanted or introduced in some way into a target's computer and can take the form of executable code, scripts, active content, and other software." - Wikipedia
We did a junk file clean up in Chapter 1 that would take care of most malware but we should still run a program to check for anything that we may have missed.
Let's check out some Malware programs.
"Protect yourself from online attacks that threaten your identity, your files, your system, and your financial well-being."
Malwarebytes and Spybot have been my first two choices for removing malware and other unwanted programs that can slow down your system by consuming system resources.
Plus, They are free!
Defragment Hard Drive
Files become fragmented over time, meaning they consist of fragments of data.
Because the hard drive scans multiple parts of the disk to read a fragmented file, it can slow down the operation of the computer.
Defragmenting your hard drive will put the file fragments back together making system performance better.
I do not recommend defragmentation of a Solid State hard drive.
Solid State have a finite lifespan which will shorten the life of the SSD with a lot of small write accesses during defragmentation.
If you have normal hard disk drive then I do recommend defragmentation of your drive.
"Defraggler speeds up your PC by assembling fragmented files on your machine and organizing them more efficiently.
Defraggler does the hard work, so your computer doesn't have to."
Windows Defrag program will work too but my favorite is Defraggler. It is also free and does a better job.
You don't have to perform multiple optimization scans with Defraggler as you do with the Windows native software.
Sometimes you cannot start up your machine due to an issue. Ultimate Boot CD and Hiren's Boot CD will help.
The names reflect old media standards but they both have a USB boot version too.
There are plenty of tools to help fix and restore your machine.
There are other tools that do the same but I have been using UBCD and HBCD for years.
"Ultimate Boot CD is completely free for the download, or could be obtained for a small fee.
If you had somehow paid a ridiculous amount of money for it, you have most likely been fleeced.
The least you could do is to make as many copies of the offical UBCD and pass it to your friends, relatives, colleagues or even complete strangers to minimize the per unit cost of your loss!"
Hiren's BootCD (also known as HBCD) is a bootable software CD containing a number of diagnostic programs such as partitioning agents,
system performance benchmarks, disk cloning and imaging tools, data recovery tools, MBR tools, BIOS tools,
and many others for fixing various computer problems.

Your machine should be running smooth.
If you still experience slowness, check the task manager to see what could be running and slowing it down.
Adding memory would be the easiest and cheapest solution to add system resources.
More memory will help limit calls back to the hard drive. Disk activity and low memory can cause severe slowness.
All software in this chapter has the option to purchase to gain extra amenities and security.
You can do it all for free if you have the time and follow these chapters.
Doing the work yourself will save you some money.
